As I was riding my wife’s Vespa Friday, the left side mirror came lose after hitting a big bump. Turned out where the mirror threads into the controls, was stripped out. At first I was wondering what I was going to have to take apart, and how many Italian parts would I have to buy?
Then I remembered helicoils are a thing. I promptly ordered a set from Amazon, which arrived today. I watched one quick YouTube video, to confirm they worked the way they appeared to work (they do). Then I went for it. Five minutes later, job done!
I had intended to video the process, to bank more content in case of e-learning this fall (I hope we’re back in school so much! ), but I forgot!
Oh well! Her scooter is back to 100% now. Hopefully she'll actually ride the thing!

Heli-Coils work REALLY well in most cases. Less- so in holes where you regularly insert and remove fasteners from. But if it’s an insert and leave it scenario they are an awesome fix, and sometimes a good preventative measure to protect original threads from being stripped out.

That makes sense. I can't say the mirror will never have to come out, but it certainly won't happen many times.

Huh, I’ve never used those. We could use those on shows actually, we get shit stripped from other countries. If I ever go back to work I will see about putting them in our job box.

My first experience with helicoils was a couple years ago when I was working on the rear suspension bushings on the TR6. The hub assembly is held to the trailing arm (aluminum) casting with 6 rather small fine thread studs. Turns out these often strip out and many people drill them out for helicoils wholesale.
I wasn’t as careful about aligned as I should have been and the new studs are just slightly crooked but fortunately the new hub went on OK.

From my very limited experience, I’m really pleased with the results. I bought a metric kit with five or six common sizes for $45. One seller had it even cheaper, but they didn't have it in stock.

I’d go back to school only if you could be my teacher for every class

Glad the heli-coils made things relatively easy! :D
